Understanding exterior wood.

The service pages tell you what I do. This page explains why. Wood does not care what the calendar says, and different surfaces on the same house can live very different lives.

The same basic rules apply to almost every piece of exterior wood.

Dryer. Cleaner. Less sun. Longer life. Most of the subjects below are different consequences of those same conditions. Understanding that first keeps us from explaining the same wood science four different ways on four different service pages.

Why wood needs its natural oils replaced

Wood does not suddenly fail on a particular anniversary. Sun, heat and weather gradually remove the oils that help keep the wood fibers stable. As those oils are lost, the fibers dry and shrink. That movement is where many of the problems people eventually see begin: checking, cracking, cupping, bowing, separation of the grain and, if deterioration is allowed to continue, rot.

A maintenance coat is not just about making the wood look freshly stained again. It is about replenishing protection before the wood has been allowed to dry far enough to damage itself. I can preserve wood where it is; I cannot reverse years of physical damage caused by waiting too long.

Why wood checks, cracks, cups and bows

These are different forms of wood movement, but loss of natural oils and repeated weather exposure are major contributors. As fibers dry they shrink, and they do not always shrink evenly. Existing grain damage, construction damage and the way a particular piece of wood was cut can also influence where that movement shows up.

A crack or check is not simply something to hide with more stain. The first job is protecting exposed wood and keeping water from being trapped where it can accelerate deterioration.

Why one side can need maintenance before the rest

The dryer, cleaner and less direct sun a wood surface receives, the longer its finish generally lasts. A wall that gets hard sun for most of the day can age years ahead of a protected wall on the same house. The same thing happens on decks: exposed horizontal surfaces usually lose protection sooner than sheltered vertical surfaces.

Maintenance should follow the condition of the wood, not an arbitrary promise that every surface will need attention on exactly the same date.

Maintenance versus starting over

At the normal maintenance point, much of the previous protection is still in the wood and only what has been lost needs to be replenished. Wait longer and the wood keeps absorbing more material because more of that protection is gone. Eventually the job stops behaving like maintenance and starts behaving much more like the original treatment again.

A maintenance application may require only a thin replenishing layer. As the wood becomes drier and more absorbent, the amount of oil needed increases. A couple of years beyond the maintenance point, I may effectively be starting over with full absorption again.

Going beyond the maintenance cycle does not save the missed maintenance cost forever. It gradually increases the amount of material and work needed later, while the wood itself continues weathering in the meantime.

Should I stain new wood?

People are often told to let new wood age before treating it. The argument is that weathering opens the wood and allows it to absorb more finish later. That can be true, but the weathering used to gain that absorption is also the beginning of the same drying process we spend the rest of the wood's life trying to control.

Modern kiln-dried lumber may not accept as much oil immediately as older, weathered wood, but when it is dry enough and ready for the product being used, it can accept enough protection to reduce needless early drying, splitting and grain separation. Waiting may buy some additional life from the first full treatment later, but the trade is allowing unprotected wood to begin deteriorating first.

Clean wood lasts longer

Dirt, pollen and organic material hold moisture against the surface. I tell customers to rinse exterior wood about twice a year: once after pollen season and again before the weather becomes too cold to comfortably get things wet. This is not a restoration wash or an excuse to attack the wood with a pressure washer. It is routine housekeeping that helps the surface dry instead of carrying a layer of damp debris.

Cleaner, drier wood with less sun exposure gives the finish the easiest life possible.

Why preparation changes from job to job

Preparation is not a recipe where every piece of wood gets the same chemical and the same pressure. Existing finish, mildew, dirt, age, species, grain condition and the product going back on all matter. Cleaner may be used to break the seal of an existing coating for maintenance; brightener may be needed where mildew or discoloration is involved; an incompatible coating may require stripping. The wood then needs adequate drying time before oil is applied.

The pressure washer is primarily a controlled rinsing tool. The objective is to remove what the cleaning process has loosened without carving lines into the wood, raising the grain or creating damage that did not exist before we arrived.

Why there is no single maintenance schedule

Horizontal surfaces, vertical surfaces, sunny walls, shaded walls, wet areas and protected areas do not weather at the same rate. A deck floor may need attention while its railings are still well protected. One wall of a log or cedar home may be ready years before the others.

The right time to maintain wood is before enough protection has been lost for the fibers themselves to begin paying the price. The calendar is a useful reminder; the condition of the wood makes the decision.

Why deck-board spacing matters

Deck boards need enough space between them for water, dirt, pollen and debris to escape. Older decking was often installed with more moisture in the lumber, so the boards shrank as they dried and the gaps opened naturally.

With kiln-dried lumber there may be much less shrinkage after installation. If those boards are installed too tightly, the narrow gaps can catch debris instead of letting it fall through. That debris holds moisture against the sides of the boards — one of the hardest places to clean and dry — and deterioration can begin from the edges inward.

I have worked on decks more than 40 years old with generous spacing and surprisingly little rot, while finding deterioration between boards on decks barely 10 years old. The calendar alone does not explain the difference; construction details and how well the wood can shed water matter.

Why deck floors need more attention than railings

Horizontal surfaces take direct sun, hold dirt and moisture, and receive foot traffic. That is why deck floors usually need maintenance sooner than vertical rails and posts. Treating the whole deck on one schedule is convenient, but the floor is usually the part telling you first that protection is being lost.

Why cedar siding weathers differently by grain and orientation

Vertical-grain cedar tends to stay cleaner and hold its appearance longer. Horizontal grain and horizontal lap siding catch more pollen and dust, which can encourage mildew and keep the surface damp longer. The profile, width, exposure and age of the siding all change how it weathers.

What happens as very old cedar loses soft fibers

Many cedar homes in the area are 40 years old or more. As weathering continues, the softer fibers between the grain can erode away. Eventually the surface begins to look deeply wrinkled. Oil can help preserve the fibers that remain, but it cannot recreate material that has already disappeared. At that point the choices may be light grain smoothing or replacing the worst boards.

Why solid-color finishes change the maintenance problem

Penetrating preservatives and surface coatings behave differently. Once cedar has been covered with a solid-color product, maintenance becomes a coating-management problem as well as a wood-preservation problem. Seasonal movement can eventually open cracks in a surface coating, allowing moisture to reach wood that is no longer able to absorb preservative in the same straightforward way.

Which checks in logs should be filled?

Checks have to be evaluated rather than automatically filled. On a rounded log, an opening above the midpoint can catch and hold water. Those checks deserve particular attention. Below the midpoint, water can often drain naturally, and forcing caulk into every opening can create hundreds of conspicuous repair lines without improving the house.

Where a check does not need to be caulked, the exposed wood still needs protection. Preservative should reach into the opening rather than simply coating across its edges.

What should be checked in existing caulking?

Existing caulking and chinking should be inspected for splits, separation, bubbles and openings that can allow water into the wall. The goal is not to cover every line with fresh material; it is to repair the places that have actually stopped doing their job.

Why rustic logs may need to be washed from more than one angle

Logs are not flat siding. Rustic or irregular profiles have curves, recesses and underside areas that may not clean properly from one direction. Reaching those areas from several angles is better than trying to solve the problem by simply increasing pressure.

Why the ends of logs need protection

End grain absorbs moisture and finish differently from the long grain along the side of a log. Those exposed ends need deliberate attention during treatment rather than being treated as an afterthought. Keeping them properly protected reduces the opportunity for moisture movement and deterioration to begin at one of the wood's most vulnerable surfaces.
